All the panel had a round table discussion in front of an audience about 17
people. Many subjects were talked about: such as entertainment laws, fire safety,
dealing with your landlord, coming up with a mission statement, and promotion.
Sean Kelly talked about why he opened his own space, interesting promotion
ideas he has seen (including listings in miss connection "cute guy at something
show"), problems in getting the proper permits, and best show in his space.
Mary Alice Fry talked about why we need more spaces for dancers, about
being a nonprofit and applying for grant ( such as the Hotel Tax Grant), the
importance of having a mission statement, and dealing with landlords.
Terrance Allen talked his early day as a Rave promoter, his winning lawsuit
against the City, what antertainment laws are, and how that are changing them.
Also, he gave a description of the exact steps need to get all the permits.
Lil Mike Matzke talked about the days of Komotion, being part of a collective,
how to get stuff done without money or contracts, interesting promotional idea
(including CD and magazine which gave out to the audience), and how to contact
people with out e-mail.
A great time was had by all, and the audience shared about spaces
they were opening or wanted to open as they got useful advice.
